One Would Always Want to Hear - Never Let Me Go

This, for me is one of the saddest movies I’ve watched. The whole movie centered on the lives of three friends, Ruth, Kathy, and Tommy. The story started up with scenes in an English school, more like a formal orphanage for me. This is where the three main characters grew up. Where they came from, who their parents were, are scenes not included in the movie. I was a little surprised when I learned that, according to the story, all the children in the school were clones. So that explains their origins. They were taken care of by the school’s management. They had classes, they played sports outside, and they mingled with each other. It was the usual setting for a school with quite a lot of students. They had this very kind teacher whom they really like. And for me the saddest part of the movie was when this teacher wasn’t able to keep the school’s secret about the children. She told them that unlike any other normal kids, they will not grow up to be professionals. She explained that the children will only live for a short time because when their bodies are ready, they will all have to donate their internal organs for those who are in need. That was their purpose as clones.

Tom and Kathy were the ones who became friends first. Ruth started out as one of those children who were always making fun of Tom for being short-tempered and for his odd drawings in art class. Even when they were still very young, Ruth already felt that Tom was someone special for her. They were always together and when Ruth noticed it, she began to get jealous and afraid to be left alone. This made Ruth find ways to get closer to Tommy and later on they became lovers. It hurt Kathy a lot but since they were both her friends, she endured it all. It was what I like about Kathy’s character, she was very strong. She chose to endure the pain to keep both persons who were so close to her heart.

The saddest part of the story was when they started to live outside the school when they were already older. Ruth and Tommy were still lovers and Kathy lived with them under the same roof. And being lovers, Ruth and Tommy had their intimate times together. Kathy heard it all. And it broke her heart every time but she chose to ignore it. Later, she decided to live away from her two friends and volunteered in a different kind of job that they can choose to do – being a volunteer for hospitals wherein they are donating their internal organs.

After a few years apart, Kathy found Ruth in one of the hospitals she was volunteering to. She already looked so sick because she already had her second donation. They were able to find Tommy in another hospital and were able to take some time to be with each other. Ruth later then died after her third donation and so was Tommy. Right before Tommy died, Ruth was able to show him her real feelings and Ruth was able to ask for forgiveness for keeping the two apart for a long time.

Okay, that was sad. I thought at least, Kathy was still alive. Unfortunately, she received her notice to begin her donation a few weeks after Tommy died. The story ended up with Ruth staring into the horizon, wishing that everything would be alright, that he will soon see Tommy walking from the horizon towards her. Well, the movie didn’t show in detail Kathy’s donation process but I knew that she would be more than happy to die because she can help others who might need her internal organs. It was their fate to fulfill. It was just so sad how a person so kind and wonderful as Kathy would go through the life she had. They learned about their fates earlier and it inspired me of how strong she faced her realities. Seldom can we find people like her. If only all of us would be like her.

"You have to know who you are, and what you are. It's the only way to lead decent lives."
